So as a lifelong airline geek I do tend to notice things that others may not. Okay fine, many other things and details.
Airline safety videos are one of them – and at first, I was mocked at. While yes, it is actually very important to pay attention to the safety information being presented to you, I don’t think many actually care about how it is presented to you.
But with the continual rise of social media and the like, more and more airlines are seizing the opportunity to get creative – sometimes at a rather impressive budget – with the demos to not only grab passengers’ attention and to get them to actually watch the video, but to also get some publicity through the internet or viral type shares.
And don’t even get us started on Air New Zealand – the master of all things gimick and flash when it comes to their safety videos, as seen here, for those Lord of the Rings fans out there. Let’s not forget their rather ambitious choices here (*ahem*…my favorite one of the lot), here and here (like rugby?).
Even more ‘traditional’ and ‘conservative’ airlines have gone a trendy or modern route, going off the beaten path a bit and coming up with some pretty crisp and hip videos either reflecting their corporate identity or cultural heritage in a different light. Hell, look at American Airlines and Air France. Good on ya!
Then there’s also those to whom this thing called money is no object. Qatar Airways got almost the entire FC Barcelona team to do this safety video for them – and it features Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar amongst others at their home at the Santiago de Bernabeu. Can you imagine how much that might have cost them?
Turkish Airlines have had their own quirky videos in the past, and like Qatar Airways have gotten a football team – Manchester United – to do a version of a safety video for them. But their new latest one stuck out to me because it was cool, clean and crisp and incorporated magic – and let’s be real, who doesn’t love a bit of magic? It was simple, featured a famous magician and illusionist in Zach King and was to the point.
At just 3 minutes they get to the point and do it in style. None of the huge productions that draw out the video to over 5 minutes long or any of the music video type track that might not be so cute as you push back from the gate at 6am.
Mind, there’s a time, place and person for videos like that but this new video from Turkish pulls all the right strings and does it effectively and stylishly, and within 3 minutes to boot! Kudos! I mean 500K+ hits in 2 days, many non TK flyers (but now want to be), would affirm so.
Do you agree? Option A: Yes! Option B: No! In which case what’s your favorite safety video out there and why? …And option C (what I like to call Joey’s option): You’re crazy and I don’t care either way.
